8 Tips on Finding the Right Workout for You

*Featured on SWEAT

When it comes to finding the right workout, it can be pretty a pretty overwhelming process. There are SO many types of workouts out there today. There are at-home workouts (like BBG), and there are workouts you can do by yourself at the gym. There are personal trainers and there are a number of fitness studios from yoga to crossfit to cycling and more. So how do you choose? Everyone is different which is why I have provided you with some tips to take into consideration when you’re deciding what is right for you!

Tip #1: Be open-minded. We often can be quick to judge a workout based on the people who do them. But you know what they say: don’t knock it until you try it! People always are afraid they are going to hate a workout but they never fear if they are going to love it! If you end up hating it, at least you can say you tried!

Tip #2: Trial and Error. You really have to try a number of different workouts until you find the right one for you. Maybe you get lucky and love the first workout you try or maybe it takes you months to find the right one for you. If you are the person who prefers to workout at a studio – do your research on the studios near you and make a plan to go to a new studio each month or even each week!

Tip #3: Make a list of the things you want in a workout: Do you want to work out alone? Do you want to have a person motivating you while you work out? Do you want to focus on cardio or do you want to lift heavy things? There are so many important factors to think about.

Tip #4: Figure out what YOU like. Are you doing a certain workout because you like it or because it’s the cool thing to do? Don’t be afraid to stray away from the crowd if the workout you are doing isn’t speaking to you. If you like to work out alone, then do so! If you like to work out in a group, do that!

Tip #5: Be aware of your body: If you have a certain injury then there are probably many types of exercises or workouts that you should stray away from. If you have any ailment, it’s important to talk to your doctor and see what he/she recommends in an exercise program. If it’s low-impact, there are a number of workouts you can do! Aside from injuries, maybe your body just doesn’t respond well to a workout. If that is the case, try to find another workout that responds better!

Tip #6: Consider your goals: The first step before you start any workout regimen is to establish your own personal goals. Are you looking to build muscle mass? Are you looking to lose fat? If you are looking to simply shed a few pounds, then Crossfit or a lifting program might not be the best to meet your personal goals. If you’re looking to just have fun and get in a good sweat, maybe a cycling class will do the trick!

Tip #7: Find what motivates you: Are you able to be self-motivated or do you need a group of people around you? Are you the type of person who needs a trainer who is pushing you and yelling in your ear or do you need a trainer who is nice to you and motivates you by encouragement? Do you a workout that is based around music? Find the things that get you excited to work out!

Tip #8: Establish a budget. This is a very important factor when it comes to working out. Are you looking to spend $10-30 a month or do you have a wider budget? We all know how expensive boutique fitness studios can get so figuring out how much you want to spend on fitness each month could be vital.

If you're just getting started with fitness, or even you're a seasoned fitness guru, hopefully these tips will help. The most important thing is to make sure you are enjoying your workout!
